Getting spammers to pay up
by Bruce Miller
Updated April 25, 2002

tugchk01.jpg Used to be that spammers were always bragging about something. And the MLM people were always bragging about their checks. This money order probably represents the first money collected from a spammer under Washington State's anti-spam law and probably the first money collected from a spammer by an individual in the United States. Wisely, this spammer saw the light and cut his loses before losing in court at $500.00 plus court costs. True, not every spammer will see the light. But the tide is turning. Let's keep up the fight to regain the storage space and services we pay for. Let's work for a ban like the ban on junk faxes. It is our space and equipment, not theirs. See the C|net article about this money order.

Since receiving that first $200 money order in 1998, I have received more checks from other spammers. (See below.) Because of confidentiality agreements I signed, I cannot reveal the details of who or how much. I can tell you that some of these out-of-court settlements included very large corporations that did not want it known that a Washington State spam victim was settling with them, for fear that other victims would be encouraged to exercise their rights.

Whether or not you are a Washington State Resident, think about your State's laws. Can any be used against a spammer? If so, you can probably help join the social movement to clean up Internet email and get a few bucks along the way. Click here for the steps I take before I file a law suit.

$5,600 collected from 6 spammers as of April 25, 2002
